Luhring Augustine Gallery

This Chelsea gallery has hosted everything from contemporary takes on iconic old masters to medieval artifacts. One visitor admired Yasumasa Morimura's (b. 1951) reimaginings of works by Velázquez, Goya, Manet, Frida Kahlo, and Vermeer. Another show featured privately owned 12th to 16th century pieces. Much of the art is not behind glass, allowing close viewing of intricate details, and some pieces are even for sale, prompting one visitor to remark, "This is like a museum where you can buy stuff."
