One Hour of Marble and Murals Inside the Schwarzman
A Beaux-Arts hall, docent-led tours and a free Treasures room holding a Gutenberg Bible, all inside one first-floor loop.
🏛️ Treasures before the reading room
The Schwarzman Building holds free walk-through galleries alongside its research rooms, and the Treasures exhibition is the reason to walk in without a plan. It displays a Gutenberg Bible, Ottoman illuminated manuscripts, Burmese palm-leaf texts, the original Winnie-the-Pooh stuffed animals and an early print of the Declaration of Independence. The galleries cost nothing and visitors can walk the halls independently. Docent-led tours run through the day for anyone who wants the architecture explained. Weekday mornings are the calmest stretch. Sunday opens later at one, and the doors close at six most evenings and at eight on Tuesday and Wednesday. Forty five minutes covers the first floor.
