The Last Hour at Gagosian Is the Empty One
The last hour before the six o'clock close leaves two large rooms almost to yourself on a weekday.
🕔 Five o'clock is the window
Chelsea's gallery hours bunch up through the afternoon and the last hour is the one most people miss. Gagosian closes at six on weekdays, which leaves anyone arriving at five a full hour for two large rooms. Five o'clock gives the rooms back to whoever stayed. The show rotates but the scale does not, monumental canvases in the first space and tighter contemporary painting behind, and staff are usually free to talk by then. Weekends are closed entirely, so Monday to Friday is the only choice. Take the larger room first and give the second one the final twenty minutes. Walk out onto West 21st before the doors shut.
