Laid out on the city grid by William Penn's surveyor, Thomas Holme, this 6.4-acre historic open-space park anchors the southeast quadrant of Center City and spans the Washington Square West and Society Hill neighborhoods. Managed by the National Park Service as part of Independence National Historical Park, the grounds hold multiple memorials and signs alongside the Tomb of the Unknown Revolutionary War Soldier, which features an eternal flame and a Houdon Washington statue. Huge, shady trees and a soothing central fountain frame the space, offering a quieter counterpoint to nearby Independence Hall.
