Philadelphia's Last Covered Bridge Along Wissahickon Creek

Pause on Forbidden Drive for a wooden landmark rebuilt in 1939 after a major storm.

Make time for the crossing.

🌉 A Crossing With History

Historic Thomas Mill Covered Bridge puts a piece of Philadelphia history right on your Forbidden Drive walk. It is the last remaining covered bridge in the city, set within the Wissahickon Valley Park section of Fairmount Park. Give this landmark a pause of its own rather than treating it as another point to pass on the trail.

The wooden crossing spans Wissahickon Creek in a peaceful park setting. The original structure was built in 1855, then reconstructed in 1939 following a major storm. That history brings a different focus to an outing here, with a surviving city landmark as the destination instead of only the path ahead.

Bring your camera for a trailside photo stop, then carry on with your walk at your own pace. The crossing has 24 hour access every day, Monday through Sunday. Find it at 8901 Forbidden Drive, where a little Philadelphia history can be part of an outdoor afternoon.
