Yellowstone Wildlife Watching Along the Lamar River Road

Watch bison and elk graze near the road, then scan for wolves and grizzlies at first light with a scope.

Pack binoculars for first light.

🦬 Along the Lamar River

Lamar Valley puts you in Yellowstone National Park wildlife country, with the Northeast Entrance Road following the Lamar River through the valley floor. Bison, elk, and pronghorns often graze near the tarmac, and animals can occasionally step onto the road. Give this stretch your attention rather than treating it as the gap between other stops.

The search for wolves and grizzlies reaches farther across the open terrain. Bring binoculars or a spotting scope and plan around first light or late evening, when predator movement peaks. Think of the roadside grazers and the more distant predators as different viewing experiences, each asking you to look across a different part of the valley.

Several trails extend into the surrounding landscape, adding a walking option to the drive. Lamar Valley is open 24 hours every day, Monday through Sunday. Choose your timing around the animals you want to observe, with a little room in the plan to linger.
