Year Round (accessible during spring, summer, and fall when the main park road is open)
Walk a short, surreal loop to see bubbling mudpots and hear the roar of the Dragon’s Mouth Spring, often alongside roaming bison.
Description

This 0.6-mile loop of boardwalks and pavement weaves through an acidic thermal landscape where microorganisms turn rock into clay. The area is defined by its bubbling mudpots and fumaroles, but the primary draw is the vociferous Dragon’s Mouth Spring, which creates a distinct, echoing roar. Because of the high concentration of hydrogen sulfide, the air carries a heavy, unmistakable scent of rotten eggs that can be overwhelming for some. You are likely to share the path with roaming buffalo, which are frequently spotted grazing near the trail or resting in the mud.
