This high-altitude basin is prime territory for wildlife. Visit at dawn or dusk to watch massive herds wander the meadows.
Description

Stretching along the Grand Loop Road between Canyon Junction and Fishing Bridge, this sub-alpine basin unfolds across rolling meadows and the Yellowstone River. Its flat floor traces an ancient lake bed that functions as a critical habitat where central bison herds congregate alongside grizzly bears and wolves. The landscape draws photographers, bird watchers, and wildlife spotters, though visitors must remain on established paths since off-trail travel is prohibited to protect the terrain.
