One Woman's Monologue, Sung by 16 Voices at Atlantic Theater
Sixteen singers share one woman's first-person monologue in Mona Pirnot's world premiere at the Linda Gross Theater.
🎼 Sixteen Voices, One Monologue
In Mona Pirnot's world premiere I Became We, with music by Jack D. Coen and direction by Sarah Benson, one woman's first-person monologue is handed to a sixteen-person choir. The voice stays singular and the delivery does not. Plainspoken lines about a mid-thirties woman facing a life-sized decision are set in classical choral shapes.
What changes is the scale of the confession. Sixteen singers carry one woman's first-person voice through breath and blend, the words stay plain, and the harmony does the arguing. It runs 70 minutes with no intermission on Mimi Lien's set, a private thought with public lungs.
Shows run through Nov 15, evenings at 7 PM and matinees at 2 PM. Regular seats are $81.50 to $121.50 with the $6.50 service charge included, and Oct 31's 7 PM show is $31 flat. Rush is $30 on TodayTix from 9 AM, $50 at the box office two hours before curtain, or $20 with a physical student ID, all subject to that day's seats. Open captions run every performance, Nov 12 at 7 PM adds audio description.
