🏛️ Louis Kahn Memorial by the River

This park on Roosevelt Island sits at the island's tip with water on both sides, and Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms State Park gives the spot a serene, architectural calm. The memorial was designed by Louis Kahn, with sweeping views of the Midtown Manhattan skyline across the East River.

The park honors the 1941 Four Freedoms speech, a statement of human rights covering speech, worship, and freedom from want and fear. A grassy lawn offers space for sitting, reading and relaxing. Bring a book and settle into a chapter while the island's resident geese roam nearby. History and a riverside reading break share the same afternoon here.

The park opens from 9 AM to 7 PM on Monday and Wednesday through Sunday, and stays closed on Tuesdays. Head to 1 FDR Four Freedoms Park with room in your afternoon for a slower pace and a long look at the skyline.
