The park honors Franklin D. Roosevelt’s 1941 Four Freedoms speech, which outlined the essential human rights of speech, worship, and freedom from want and fear. Flanked by the East River on both sides, the park features a grassy lawn for seating, reading, and relaxing. Visitors sharing the lawns are likely to spot the island's resident roaming geese.
