Intact 1832 Home With a Preserved Trapdoor

Trace the Tredwell family story room by room, then find a hideaway from the Underground Railroad era.

Look for the preserved trapdoor.

🗝️ A House With Secrets

Four original floors carry the Tredwell family story through domestic rooms, period furnishings, and the lives of their Irish servants. The Greek Revival house dates to 1832, and its interior and exterior remain original. You can move through the family home, following the details of wealthy merchant class domestic life in New York.

From Wednesday through Sunday, guided tours are offered at noon, and self guided tours run from 1 PM to 5 PM, with last entry at half past four PM. Take the house at your own pace, then look for the original hideaway and trapdoor preserved in this documented Underground Railroad site.

The story widens into 19th century death practices and ongoing paranormal research, while candlelight ghost tours shift the experience after dark. At 29 East 4th Street in Manhattan, the museum links family history, domestic labor, preservation, and the city's more unsettling chapters.
