A Washington Art Weekend, One Pair at a Time

Friday pairs craft with Dupont Circle modern art; Saturday moves from architecture to portraiture; Sunday stays with art on the National Mall. Six stops, two per day, with room to shorten the plan.

Save this art weekend.

🎨 Friday: Craft to Modern Art

Start small at Renwick Gallery, where contemporary craft gives the weekend a clear focus, then turn toward Dupont Circle for The Phillips Collection. Choose a few rooms rather than chasing every work. Check the Phillips admission options before leaving, and leave space between visits for a break instead of treating Friday as a museum marathon.

🏛️ Saturday: Buildings and Portraits

Begin with the scale of National Building Museum, then move into the faces and stories of National Portrait Gallery. This pairing trades architectural detail for close looking without sending you across the city. Check exhibition tickets separately from general access, carry only what you need, and keep the second stop flexible if the first deserves more time.

🖼️ Sunday: Two Sides of the Mall

Give National Gallery of Art one theme, then finish with contemporary work at Hirshhorn Museum. These Mall stops make sense together, but two institutions can still fill a day. Decide which collection matters most before you arrive, check current gallery and garden access, and skip a wing rather than rushing through art you wanted to notice.

☔ Plan B: Keep It Flexible

Rain: Keep the same museum pairings, shorten outdoor links, and choose one institution if the weather makes moving between stops uncomfortable. Check current entrances before setting out.

Crowds: Reverse a day’s two stops only after checking their opening times, or stay longer in the quieter rooms. A shorter visit is better than building the day around an unverified entry time.

Budget: Prioritize the collections you most want to see, check current admission policies, and drop a paid exhibition rather than assuming a discount or free entry.
