A Hidden Fort Museum by the Water, Then Fried Seafood on City Island
Tour a quiet fort museum at the tip of Throggs Neck, then drive to City Island for fried seafood at outdoor blue picnic tables.
🗺️ Two Bronx Waterfronts
⚓ Stop 1 · Maritime Industry Museum
The Maritime Industry Museum fills the arched brick vaults of Fort Schuyler, tucked inside the SUNY Maritime College campus at the tip of Throggs Neck. Visitors enter through the campus security gate on Pennyfield Avenue and follow the loop road south to the fort entrance, where parking is free. Display cases hold detailed ship models and maritime artifacts, and the lawn outside looks straight out at the Throgs Neck Bridge. Admission is free, and the galleries open Monday through Saturday from 9 AM to 4 PM.

🍤 Stop 2 · Johnny's Reef
Johnny's Reef sits at the southern tip of City Island Avenue, about a 15-minute drive from the fort. This waterfront counter-service staple has served fried clams, shrimp, and fish at outdoor blue picnic tables for decades, with Long Island Sound right beside the seating. The kitchen closes on Mondays and Tuesdays, opening Wednesday through Sunday at 11:30 AM and running until 10:30 PM on Saturdays. Cash is traditionally preferred at the counter, so check accepted payment options before ordering.

🚗 How the Day Flows
Start at the fort near opening time and give the galleries and the waterfront lawn about an hour. A car or rideshare is the simplest link between the two stops. Reaching Johnny's Reef by early afternoon leaves time for a stroll along City Island Avenue, where Sammy's Fish Box offers a sit-down alternative. Bring a layer, the wind off the Sound picks up in October.
