Chinatown runs on an early clock. The markets are busiest at eight in the morning, dinner peaks before seven-thirty, and by ten most of Stockton and Grant is shuttered. But the neighbourhood does not go completely dark, and the thin late seam that stays open — noodle rooms, congee counters, the blocks nearest Broadway — is some of the most useful food in San Francisco, because so little else in this city is serving at that hour.
The late list here is short and changes with the night of the week, and a lot of the posted hours are years out of date. Ask Karpo which kitchens near you are still taking orders right now before you walk over.
The Broadway edge is where late starts
The boundary between Chinatown and North Beach along Broadway is the busiest late corridor in this part of the city, and the food follows the bar traffic. Walking two blocks south from Broadway into Chinatown at eleven at night gets you cheaper and better options than staying on the strip — noodle soup, rice plates, dumplings, and the odd counter doing barbecue until it runs out.
This is also the safest late-night orientation point: it is well lit, there are people about, and the Muni lines that run overnight are a short walk away.

Congee, noodles and the late-night canon
The classic late order in Chinatown is congee — rice porridge cooked down for hours, with century egg and pork, fish, or preserved vegetable, served with a fried dough stick to dip. It is cheap, it is gentle, and it is exactly what you want at midnight. The other pillar is wonton noodle soup, where the test is the broth and the spring of the noodle rather than the size of the wontons. Both are available at several rooms that stay open past most of the neighbourhood.
A third option people miss: the late dessert counters doing sweet soups, tofu pudding and shaved ice, which run later than the kitchens and cost a few dollars.
How to find what is open without walking in circles
Posted hours in this neighbourhood are among the least reliable in San Francisco — many listings were never updated after the pandemic-era changes, and family-run rooms adjust hours based on staffing without telling anyone. Three habits help. Look for lights on the first floor as well as at street level, since a lot of these rooms are upstairs. Check whether a delivery app shows the kitchen accepting orders, which is a live signal rather than a stale listing. And walk Stockton and Jackson rather than Grant, because the late rooms serving residents are on the working streets.
If everything is shut
The fallback ladder from Chinatown is short and worth memorising. North Beach slice counters run latest of anything within walking distance. The Mission, fifteen minutes away on the 30 and then the 14, has taquerias open past two. And the 24-hour convenience options along Broadway will at least get you through until morning. Anything further than that and you are better off going home.
Practical notes
Carry cash; late is exactly when the card terminal is least likely to be working. Kitchens stop taking orders well before the posted closing time, often by thirty to sixty minutes, so treat any listed hour as optimistic. Muni's Owl service covers the Stockton and Columbus corridors overnight, which is the cheapest way home. Groups should call ahead even late, because the room that is still open may have one cook. And be aware that during Lunar New Year and other festival weeks the whole neighbourhood's hours change completely, in both directions.
Late is also a takeaway proposition
A lot of the food that is still available in Chinatown after ten is takeaway rather than sit-down: barbecue meat by weight, containers of congee, dumplings by the dozen. If the room you wanted has closed its dining area, ask whether the kitchen is still filling orders — frequently it is for another half hour after the chairs go up.
This is the most practical late-night move in the neighbourhood: buy it, walk two minutes to Portsmouth Square or up to the edge of North Beach, and eat it there.
Weekends extend the window meaningfully. Friday and Saturday nights push the last orders an hour or more later at several of the rooms that close early midweek, and the Broadway edge stays busy until the bars empty. A Tuesday at eleven and a Saturday at eleven are genuinely different neighbourhoods.

Ask Karpo first
Late hours in Chinatown are set by whoever is working that night and almost never match what is posted online. Ask Karpo which kitchens near you are still taking orders right now, what they are serving, and how to get home afterwards.
