Finding a San Francisco club that will give the night some shape is harder than finding a pin on Fillmore Street. The Boom Boom Room solves it when the choice is between a proper live set and a room that shuts down before the evening has started. It opens late, runs past midnight, and puts the stage at the back of a dark room with a bar, tables and a dance floor. Start with the bill, not the legend
The Boom Boom Room opened in 1997, when Alex Andreas converted the former Jack's Tavern into a live-music club built around John Lee Hooker's name and likeness. Its name comes from Hooker's 1962 song "Boom Boom", giving the room a clear blues lineage. That history still matters, but it is not a description of every night on the calendar.
Current programming reaches into disco, comedy, salsa, punk-funk, R&B, funk and rock as well as blues. The venue has hosted Elvis Costello, Van Morrison and David Bowie, which places it in the broader history of the Fillmore's live circuit rather than in a single genre box. A good visit begins by treating the event listing as the night's identity.
The address carries two different histories
The club sits at 1601 Fillmore St, directly across from the Fillmore Auditorium at the northwest corner of Fillmore Street and Geary Boulevard. That makes the location unusually legible for a night out: the larger concert room is opposite, while this venue offers a more compact club setting on the same corner.
The building's earlier story belongs to Jack's Tavern. It opened in 1933 at 1931 Sutter St. and moved to 1601 Fillmore St. in 1988, before becoming the Boom Boom Room in 1997. The John Lee Hooker connection was personal and promotional rather than an ownership arrangement; Hooker did not invest money in the club.
The room keeps its history at eye level
Inside, the layout is straightforward. A bar runs along the right, small tables sit on the left, the stage occupies the back and a dance floor fills the centre. The interior is dark, held together by a low red glow rather than bright general lighting. It is a room arranged around the performance, but with enough open floor for nights that ask people to move.
Black-and-white photographs of musicians line the walls, including work by Grammy Award-winning photographer Jim Marshall. An oil painting of John Lee Hooker by San Jose artist Bruni Sablan hangs inside as well. Hooker's former booth remains preserved and off-limits, so it is part of the club's historical scenery, not a table to request.
Use the calendar as the door policy
The venue's event listings are not interchangeable. They identify nights as 21-plus and mix advance-ticket events, RSVP events and no-cover events. That means the same room can require different preparation from one evening to the next. A ticketed show is not the same proposition as an RSVP night, and a no-cover listing does not imply that every other event works that way.

Arrive for the room you want
The furniture gives the evening two obvious modes. Small tables on the left suit a night spent watching the stage, while the dance floor is the practical centre of gravity for disco, salsa, funk and similar bills. The bar is on the right, so the room can be read quickly on arrival. The preserved Hooker booth is not an alternative seat, however, and should be treated as a display of the club's past.
Timing matters more than a generic opening-hours check. A 6:00 PM door is a different proposition from an 8:00 PM door, particularly when the listed show time follows later. Arriving at the venue without checking the date's arrangement risks turning up too early for the chosen event or assuming a ticket is available at the door when the listing is built around advance sales or RSVP.
Late night here is a schedule, not a promise
The club's weekly hours run into the early morning but change by day. Tuesday is listed from 6:00 PM to 1:00 AM; Wednesday from 6:30 PM to 1:30 AM; Thursday from 6:30 PM to 2:00 AM; and Friday and Saturday from 6:30 PM to 2:30 AM. It is closed on Sunday and Monday.
That pattern makes Friday and Saturday the clearest choices for a later finish, while Tuesday carries the earliest listed opening and the shortest late-night window. The exact event still takes priority over the general schedule. The 22 Fillmore stops at Fillmore Street and Geary Boulevard, and the 38 Geary also serves Geary Boulevard and Fillmore Street, putting both routes beside the club.
