Bernal Heights is a hill with a village on top of it, and the village is about five blocks of Cortland Avenue. There is no second commercial strip, no destination restaurant drawing people across the city, and almost nothing that takes a booking. For anyone looking for somewhere to eat tonight without planning, that combination is more useful than a neighbourhood with twice the options and a reservation system attached to each of them.
Cortland is short enough to walk in ten minutes and its rooms are small enough that timing matters more than choosing. Tell Karpo when you are heading up the hill and it will tell you what has a table.
The range on one street
The thing that makes Cortland work is how little it repeats itself. Moki's Sushi & Seafood at 615 Cortland Avenue does some of the more inventive rolls you will find in the city, in a room that is very much a neighbourhood restaurant rather than a sushi destination. Taco Los Altos at 737 Cortland Avenue is the taquería, and the pricing is the sort that has largely disappeared from the eastern half of San Francisco. Vega at 419 Cortland Avenue covers pizza.
Go Duck Yourself is the Cantonese barbecue on the street, doing roast meats, which is not a category most five-block commercial strips manage to support at all. Between those four you have sushi, tacos, pizza and roast duck inside a ten-minute walk, which is a genuinely unusual density for a neighbourhood this size.
The bakeries, which anchor the mornings
Black Jet Baking at 833 Cortland Avenue does pies, cakes, cupcakes, breads and cookies, and makes pizza on Saturdays — a detail worth remembering, because a bakery that turns into a pizza operation one day a week is exactly the sort of thing that is never listed anywhere useful. Bernal Backery at 521 Cortland Avenue covers the other end of the street.
Two bakeries on five blocks tells you what kind of neighbourhood this is: one where people walk to buy bread, rather than one where people drive in for dinner.
The bars
Holy Water on Cortland Avenue carries a strong beer and cocktail list and functions as the street's proper drinking room. Wild Side West is the long-standing Bernal institution — a bar with a large garden out the back that most people do not realise is there until they have walked through the building.
Neither is a restaurant, and both matter for the same reason: on a street this short, the evening is assembled by walking between four or five doors rather than by choosing one and staying. The bars are what make that work.
Why nothing here takes a reservation
It is worth understanding the economics rather than just noting the fact. These rooms are small and their customers live within a few blocks. A booking system exists to manage demand from people travelling in, and Bernal does not have that problem — the demand is local, it arrives on foot, and it is spread across the week rather than concentrated on Friday and Saturday.
The practical consequence is that turning up is the correct strategy here, and that the busiest hour is earlier than you would expect. A neighbourhood that walks to dinner eats at seven, not at nine.
Choosing
Two of you, no plan, want to sit down: Moki's. Cheap and fast: Taco Los Altos. Feeding several people without ceremony: Vega, for pizza. Something you cannot get in most neighbourhoods: Go Duck Yourself. Saturday, and you want pizza from a bakery: Black Jet. A drink first, or instead: Holy Water, or Wild Side West for the garden.

Black Jet makes pizza on Saturdays. The whole commercial strip runs roughly between the 400 and 900 blocks, which is a comfortable ten-minute walk end to end. Bernal Heights is a genuine hill and Cortland sits near the top of it — the 24 Divisadero runs along Cortland itself, which is worth knowing if you are coming up from the Mission on foot and would rather not climb.
