There is a two-hundred-metre stretch of 18th Street in the Mission that does more work than most neighbourhoods manage in a mile. Delfina and Pizzeria Delfina sit next door to each other on it, and understanding which one you want — and when — is the difference between a good evening and standing outside reading a menu.
Two doors, one block, different rules. Knowing which is which saves you the walk back.
Two restaurants, two doors
Delfina, the trattoria, is at 3621 18th Street. Pizzeria Delfina is next door at 3611. They share a name and a lineage; they are not the same experience and they do not run the same service.
The pizzeria runs Monday through Saturday 4.30pm to 10.00pm, and Sunday 4.30pm to 9.00pm. It has a takeout and pickup window on 18th Street, and it is on the major delivery platforms — which is the fastest route to a wood-fired Neapolitan-style pizza in this part of the Mission when you do not want to sit down.
The trattoria next door is the sit-down, book-a-table version. If you want a full Italian dinner rather than a pizza, that is the door. The phone for the block is (415) 552-4055.
The 4.30pm opening is the whole trick
Both rooms open at 4.30pm, which in San Francisco terms is early. The Mission's dinner rush does not properly start until seven, so the first ninety minutes of service on this block are consistently the easiest seats of the night.
Sunday is the exception at the pizzeria — it closes an hour earlier, at 9pm rather than 10pm. A 9.15pm Sunday plan that works six nights a week does not work on the seventh, which is exactly the sort of detail that ruins an evening.
There is no lunch service at the pizzeria. If you are on 18th Street at one in the afternoon, this block is not your answer; it becomes one at half past four.
Dolores Park is three blocks west
This is the part that makes the block worth planning around rather than just eating at. Mission Dolores Park is a short walk west, it is free, and on a clear afternoon it is the best public space in the city for doing nothing.
The obvious sequence writes itself: park from mid-afternoon, walk east to 18th Street as the light drops, and be at the pizzeria window or the trattoria door for the 4.30pm open. You get the best of the park and the easiest seating of the night in one move.
The reverse also works if the weather is doing what San Francisco weather does. Eat early, then walk up into the park when the fog has burned off, which in this part of the city is often late afternoon rather than midday.
Reading the rest of the block
18th Street between Guerrero and Dolores is dense with places to eat and drink, which means the strategy of turning up without a plan is more viable here than almost anywhere else in San Francisco. If the trattoria is full, you are thirty seconds from three alternatives.
The corollary is that parking is close to hopeless. This is a walk, bike or transit block. The 33 and the J both put you within a few minutes, and Mission and 16th is a manageable walk if you are coming in on BART.
Valencia Street runs parallel one block east and is the other spine of this neighbourhood — bookshops, more restaurants, and the murals in the alleys off it. If your table is not ready, that is the direction to walk.
Which door to pick
Pizza, a group, or no plan: the pizzeria. Wood-fired Neapolitan-style pizzas, salads and pastas, a takeout window if you would rather eat in the park, and delivery if you would rather not leave at all.
A proper sit-down dinner, a booking, a longer evening: the trattoria. It is the older and quieter of the two rooms and the one that rewards arriving with a reservation rather than optimism.
Either way, aim for 4.30pm or accept that you are eating at eight with everyone else. There is no third option on this block on a Friday.
