San Francisco is a whole-pie city that happens to have a small, geographically concentrated slice economy bolted onto it. That distinction matters more than any argument about crust. Most of the best pizza here is sold as a booked table and a whole pie; the counters that will hand you a single slice over a counter are a separate, much shorter list, they cluster in about four neighbourhoods, and several of them close far earlier than their reputations suggest. If you want a slice at ten on a Tuesday, the map is smaller than you think.
The slice counters here are a different business from the pizzerias, and several close hours earlier than their reputation implies. Ask Karpo which slice window is actually open right now.
North Beach Is Still the Centre of It
Golden Boy at 542 Green Street is the archetype and the one most likely to disappoint someone working from an old recommendation. It sells thick Sicilian-style focaccia squares, it is takeout only, and payment is cash or a physical card, with no contactless. Its hours now run 11:30am to 9pm Monday to Thursday and Sunday, and 11:30am to 11pm Friday and Saturday.
Read those hours carefully if you have heard of Golden Boy as a late-night institution, because that reputation is out of date. A 9pm weekday close makes it an early-evening business. It is still the North Beach party-crowd stop between rooms on a Friday, when it runs to eleven, but a Tuesday plan built around it needs to happen before nine.
Two blocks away, Tony's Pizza Napoletana at 1570 Stockton Street runs seven different types of oven and cooks Neapolitan, classic American, Italian, Sicilian and Romana styles under one roof, noon to 10pm Monday to Thursday and noon to 11pm Friday to Sunday. The slice operation is the adjacent Slice House counter rather than the restaurant itself, which is the distinction people miss when they queue for a table and then discover they wanted the counter next door.

The Big Slice, and the Stockton Street Side Door
Flour and Water runs the most interesting slice arrangement in the city and a lot of people walk straight past it. The Pizzeria sits at 532 Columbus Avenue, open 11:30am to 10pm daily, and the Pizza Shop counter at 1533 Stockton Street runs the same hours with a takeaway proposition attached: whole pies plus the Big Slice, an oversized square slice of the day, and a frozen alcoholic slushie if you want one.
The slice of the day format is a genuine advantage for a walk-up. It means the counter is committing to one thing per day and turning it over rather than holding six varieties under a lamp, which is the single biggest quality variable in slice service anywhere. Ask what it is before you decide; the answer changes.
Chinatown and the Tenderloin: The Two Late Counters
Outta Sight Pizza runs two locations that between them cover the parts of the city where you are most likely to need a slice at an awkward hour: 643 Clay Street in Chinatown and 422 Larkin Street in the Tenderloin. Both are counter-first operations rather than restaurants, and they are the practical answer for anyone coming out of downtown or Civic Center rather than out of North Beach.
This is also the geographic point about San Francisco slices generally. The counters cluster in North Beach, Chinatown, the Tenderloin and the Financial District edge, which is to say the dense, walkable, night-active core. In the residential west of the city, the Sunset, the Richmond, the avenues generally, a walk-up slice at 10pm is not a realistic expectation and the answer is a whole pie ordered ahead.
The Marina Outlier That Runs to Three in the Morning
One address breaks the pattern and it is worth knowing about because it is nowhere near the others. Marina Pizza and Pasta at 2139 Lombard Street runs Monday to Thursday 4pm to midnight, Friday and Saturday 11am to 3am, and Sunday 11am to 11pm, and it sells by the slice.
A 3am weekend close is later than anything in North Beach and it sits in a neighbourhood nobody thinks of as a late-night district. If you are on the Chestnut or Union Street strips on a Friday and everything has stopped serving, this is the answer, and it is a short walk rather than a ride across town.
How to Judge a Slice Counter in Ten Seconds
Two things tell you almost everything. First, how many varieties are sitting out. A counter running two or three is turning them over; a counter running eight at 9pm is holding most of them and reheating on demand, which is fine if you know that is what you are buying and disappointing if you expected fresh. Second, whether the reheat is in a deck oven or under a lamp. A slice that goes back into real heat comes out with a crisp base; a slice held warm goes soft in the middle and no amount of quality in the original pie fixes it.
The third habit, specific to this city: check the closing time before you walk. San Francisco's food hours contracted after 2020 and a lot of them have not come back, so the institution you remember running until two in the morning may now shut at nine. Golden Boy is the clearest example, and it is not the only one.

Ask Karpo first
San Francisco kitchen hours have contracted and a lot of listings still show pre-2020 closing times. Ask Karpo which slice counter near you is open right now, what today's slice of the day is at the Stockton Street counter, and whether it is worth walking to North Beach or staying where you are.
