Gabriel Kreuther Fine Dining, Midtown: $155 Pre-Theater

Gabriel Kreuther at 41 West 42nd Street serves a $155 pre-theater menu Monday to Thursday from 4:45 pm. The bar seats walk-ins first come, first served.

Gabriel Kreuther's pre-theater menu costs $155 per person and is served Monday through Thursday from 4:45 pm to 5:45 pm, which leaves time to walk to a Broadway curtain. The restaurant sits at 41 West 42nd Street, facing Bryant Park from the base of the W. R. Grace Building, and the chef's Alsatian cooking holds two Michelin stars in the 2025 guide. For anyone looking up fine dining near me around Times Square, it is the most polished way to eat early.

Plan a Bryant Park Evening

An Alsatian Chef's Room Facing Bryant Park

Kreuther grew up in Alsace and trained in Michelin-starred kitchens in Germany, France and Switzerland before New York stints at La Caravelle, Jean-Georges, Atelier at the Ritz-Carlton and The Modern. Food and Wine named him one of its Best New Chefs in 2003, and he won the James Beard Award for Best Chef: New York City in 2009. In June 2015 he opened this restaurant under his own name.

The dining room is built as a love letter to his home region. Reclaimed wood beams, inspired by the timber houses of Alsace, frame the room, and cream banquettes line the walls. Look up and you will see 42 crystal storks, the bird of Alsace, flying east toward Kreuther's native Strasbourg. The restaurant also lists a AAA Five Diamond award and a Wine Spectator Grand Award among its honors.

The critical record matches the setting. The New York Times gave the restaurant three stars, it earned a Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star rating in 2023, and it is a member of Relais and Châteaux. Michelin awarded one star in 2015, the year it opened, and raised it to two in 2019. A decade of steady recognition at the same address is rare on a block that sees as much turnover as 42nd Street.

Three Courses, Four Courses or the Chef's Tasting

The dining room menus are priced by length. Three courses, a first course, an entrée and dessert, cost $200. Four courses cost $235, and the Chef's Tasting Menu is $325. Wine pairings come at three levels: the Classic pairing at $255, the Reserve pairing at $595, and a Grand Reserve pairing priced on request.

Several dishes carry supplements, and the menu prints them openly. A 30-gram tin of Ossetra caviar adds $145, Maine lobster adds $20, and Kozatsu A4 Wagyu striploin adds $55. If you are choosing between four courses and the tasting menu, the four-course format gives you the two signatures below plus a main and dessert, which is enough for most first visits.

The Sturgeon Tart and Other Signatures

The sturgeon and sauerkraut tart is the dish Kreuther is known for. On the current menu it comes with applewood smoke, a sabayon and imperial Kaluga caviar, and it pulls together the smoked fish and fermented cabbage of Alsace in a single elegant bite. Order it even if you skip everything else, because nothing else in Midtown tastes like it.

The applewood-smoked bacon tarte flambée, with onion and crème fraîche, is the region's classic bar snack in its finest form. La Belle foie gras terrine arrives with Concord grape, macadamia, gin and thyme, and gently poached Nova Scotia halibut comes with celtuce, a Comté crust and a smoked mussel nage. For dessert, the chocolate tart soufflé with coffee crémeux, pecan praline and whiskey sabayon is the one to save room for.

The Pre-Theater Hour

The $155 pre-theater menu runs only from 4:45 pm to 5:45 pm, Monday through Thursday, and it uses seasonal dishes that can differ from the main card. Book the earliest slot, tell your server about the curtain time when you sit down, and you can be out the door with time to walk west on 42nd Street to the theaters around Times Square.

Our honest call: skip the wine pairing on a pre-theater night. Three courses with the Classic pairing at $255 would cost more than the meal itself, and one glass of Alsatian Riesling suits this cooking just as well. Save the pairings and the Chef's Tasting for a long Friday or Saturday, when the kitchen serves until 10 pm.

Bar, Lounge and Booking Strategy

Reservations are on Resy, and the restaurant also takes them by phone and email. The bar does not take reservations: walk-ins are welcomed on a first-come, first-served basis, and the à la carte menu is served there. The lounge does take reservations and offers the à la carte list along with the three-course, four-course and Chef's Tasting menus.

If Resy shows nothing for your night, arrive at 4:45 pm and ask for a bar seat, since the room is at its quietest then. The bar draws Midtown office workers stopping in after the day, theater couples watching the clock, and solo diners who come for the tarte flambée and a glass of wine. For groups, the Chef's Table inside the kitchen seats up to 10 guests.

Dress is business casual, so a jacket is welcome but not needed, and suits, ties and jackets are not required. Mention allergies when you book, because the menu flags raw and undercooked preparations, including the caviar and fish courses, and the kitchen plans substitutions before service.

A Walk Across 42nd Street

Bryant Park is directly across the street, and on a mild evening its lawn, chairs and plane trees make the best waiting room in Midtown. Next door to the park, the New York Public Library's Stephen A. Schwarzman Building guards its Fifth Avenue steps with the two marble lions Mayor Fiorello La Guardia named Patience and Fortitude in the 1930s.

After a late dinner, the park's paths empty out and the lit facade of the library glows over Fifth Avenue. It is a short walk to the B, D, F and M trains at 42nd Street–Bryant Park, or to the 7 train at Fifth Avenue, so the walk home starts within a block of the restaurant door.
