Daniel Fine Dining on the Upper East Side: $195 Prix Fixe

Daniel at 60 East 65th Street opens Tuesday to Sunday from 5 pm and books on Resy 60 days out. Walk-ins can try the bar and lounge for the $75 Wagyu burger.

Daniel is closed on Mondays, and on every other night from Tuesday to Sunday the dining room at 60 East 65th Street opens at 5 pm and books on Resy 60 days ahead. Daniel Boulud's flagship, between Park and Madison Avenues, has been the Upper East Side's address for formal French cooking since 1993, and its three-course prix fixe at $195 is the entry point. Anyone typing fine dining near me from a Madison Avenue hotel should know the bar takes walk-ins, too.

Three Decades of Daniel Boulud on East 65th

Boulud opened Daniel in 1993 and moved it to its current home on East 65th Street in early 1999. The restaurant's future at that address was settled in March 2026, when Hoodline reported that the Dinex Group had signed a 20-year lease with the building's new owner, SL Green, keeping the restaurant where it is. For a dining room this tied to its neighborhood, the lease was the news regulars wanted.

The restaurant holds one Michelin star in the 2025 guide, after keeping two stars until 2023, and it belongs to Relais and Châteaux and Les Grandes Tables du Monde. The star count matters less here than the style. Daniel still cooks in the grand French register, with sauces and garnishes built course by course, at a time when many New York tasting rooms have gone minimalist.

The Sunken Room With the Alex Katz Landscapes

The main dining room is set a few steps below the lounge, ringed with white columns and hung with large Alex Katz landscapes. The Infatuation described it as a pit-like room, and that is meant kindly: guests in the lounge look down into it, while diners below sit inside a calm, enclosed space that feels sealed off from the traffic on Park Avenue.

The crowd skews toward longtime Upper East Side regulars, couples celebrating anniversaries and gallery collectors in from Madison Avenue. The house dress code is formal, jackets are strongly suggested for men, and shorts, sandals, athletic wear and distressed jeans are not allowed. The restaurant also notes that baby strollers cannot be accommodated, which tells you what kind of evening it is designed for.

Prix Fixe or Seven-Course Tasting

The dining room offers three formats. The three-course prix fixe is $195 per person, and the five-course prix fixe is $255, with an optional wine pairing at $195 for either. The seven-course seasonal tasting menu is $295, with a $225 pairing, and a vegetarian tasting menu is also $295. Royal Ossetra caviar can be added as a supplement, starting at $385 for 50 grams.

For a first visit, the three-course prix fixe gives you the most control, since you choose a first course, a main and a dessert from the full seasonal card. Recent menus have included Zucca pasta Forestière with mushroom consommé and enoki tempura, a Maine sea scallop cooked à la plancha, a kataifi-crusted New Zealand langoustine and a saddle of Elysian Fields Farm lamb.

The seven-course tasting is the better choice when the table wants to see the kitchen's full range without debating the card. Note that the vegetarian tasting carries the same $295 price as the omnivore menu, so a mixed table pays the same either way. The restaurant prices caviar separately, and the 50-gram supplement is a big add-on, so decide on it before the sommelier arrives with the pairing pitch.

The Lounge and Bar Without a Reservation

The lounge, raised above the dining room, serves the same prix fixe and tasting menus plus an à la carte list. Lounge mains run from $54 to $79, with the Dover sole Florentine, served with matsutake mushrooms and creamed spinach, at $68 and the Scharbauer Ranch Wagyu striploin at $79. Desserts are $25 and the cheese course is $39, so two people can share a main, a dessert and a glass each.

The bar is where Daniel loosens its tie. Le Grand Cru Burger, a six-ounce Scharbauer Wagyu patty with black truffle Brie, costs $75, and smaller bites start at $8. Our honest take: the burger is a splurge built for curiosity, not value, and the Dover sole in the lounge is the better way to taste this kitchen without the full menu. The restaurant welcomes walk-ins at the bar and lounge, subject to availability.

Resy Timing, Cancellations and Big Parties

Bookings open on Resy 60 days in advance, and the cleanest strategy is to set a reminder for the morning your target date appears. Resy lists a $100 cancellation fee for changes inside 24 hours of the reservation, so plan the date before you commit. Early slots at 5 pm and 5:30 pm are the easiest to land on short notice.

For private events, the Bellecour Room seats up to 90 guests, and a chef's table in the kitchen takes up to four. If a weeknight table falls through, the bar is the plan B: arrive close to 5 pm, when the room opens and seats are easiest to claim.

A Museum Hour Before Dinner

The Frick Collection, on Fifth Avenue at 70th Street, reopened on April 17, 2025, after its largest renovation since 1935, and it is a five-block walk from the restaurant. An afternoon in the galleries followed by a 5 pm prix fixe at Daniel makes for a classic Upper East Side day that never requires a taxi.

After dinner, walk two avenues west to Fifth Avenue and the edge of Central Park, then down past the Madison Avenue boutiques to the 6 train. The neighborhood empties early, and the side streets between Park and Fifth are some of the calmest blocks in Manhattan at 10 pm.
