Under the Mango Tree is a small vegan café at 737 Fifth Street in Miami Beach, a few blocks from the ocean and a long way in spirit from the Ocean Drive strip. It serves smoothies, acai bowls, juices, sandwiches and light plant-based plates, and it closes at six in the evening every day. That closing time is the most important operational fact about it: this is a morning and afternoon place, and treating it as a dinner option is the fastest way to end up somewhere worse.
A vegan café that shuts before dinner and is best used before noon. Ask Karpo whether it is open now and what else nearby fits the hour.
The hours, and what they imply
Monday to Friday it runs 8am to 6pm. Saturday it opens at 9am and runs to 6pm. Sunday it opens at 9am and closes at 5pm.
A six o'clock close in South Beach is early enough that it removes the entire evening. Every plan involving this place is a daytime plan.
The eight o'clock weekday opening is the useful end. South Beach in the early morning — before the heat and before the crowds — is the version of the neighbourhood worth being in, and there are very few places open in it.
The Sunday five o'clock finish is the one that catches people out most often, because Sunday afternoon is exactly when a visitor is most likely to wander over.
Entirely plant-based, without making a point of it
The kitchen is vegan throughout, which means there is no negotiation required and no menu section to hunt for.
What distinguishes it from the wider category is that it does not lean on meat substitutes. The food is built from fruit, vegetables, grains and nuts rather than from engineered replacements, which produces a lighter and more coherent menu.
The smoothies and acai bowls are the volume sellers and are properly made — thick rather than watery, and topped generously.
The savoury side — bowls, sandwiches, light plates — is where the salad search actually lands, and it is more substantial than the café's size suggests.
A small room, and what that means
This is a genuinely small operation, not a chain outlet. Seating is limited and it fills at peak.
The consequence is that this works best as a solo or two-person stop rather than a group destination. A party of six will struggle.
It also means service moves at the pace of a small kitchen rather than a production line. If you are in a hurry, order something cold.
The atmosphere is the main argument alongside the food. It is calm in a neighbourhood that is not, which is worth a detour on its own.
It is worth putting the location in context. South Beach's food economy is overwhelmingly aimed at people who will eat there once, which produces high prices, large portions and menus designed to photograph rather than to nourish.
A small vegan café that closes before dinner is the opposite of that business model. It exists on repeat custom from people who live nearby, which is why the prices are reasonable and why the room is calm.
That also explains the hours. There is no reason to stay open until midnight for a customer base that is asleep by then.

Fifth Street and the surrounding blocks
Fifth Street runs across the southern end of South Beach, connecting the causeway to the ocean, and the blocks around this stretch are more residential and considerably less touristed than anything ten blocks north.
South Pointe Park is a short walk east and is one of the better free things on the island — a waterfront park at the tip of the beach with a pier and views back at the port.
The natural shape of a morning: eat here early, walk down to the park, and be back before the heat peaks.
Parking on Fifth Street is metered and busy. The surrounding residential streets are easier and the walk is short.
Who it suits
Anyone eating plant-based on Miami Beach, anyone up early, and anyone who wants a quiet room rather than a scene.
It suits a group dinner not at all, both because of the hours and because of the size.
For visitors, it is a useful counterweight to a beach holiday that otherwise consists of large plates and cocktails.
Practical notes
Under the Mango Tree is at 737 5th Street, Miami Beach. Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm; Saturday 9am to 6pm; Sunday 9am to 5pm.
Counter service, small seating area, no reservations.
It is entirely vegan, so no dietary negotiation is required — but equally, there is no non-vegan option for anyone in your group who wants one.
