Late Thursday Perfumery Testing on Larchmont: The Scent Room
The Scent Room at 142 1/2 N Larchmont Blvd stays open until 8 PM Thursday to Saturday, no booking needed. Its 80-plus niche brands are tested on skin.
The Scent Room, at 142 1/2 N Larchmont Blvd in Los Angeles, is an independent niche perfumery that stays open until 8 PM on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The other four days it runs from 11 AM to 6 PM. There is no designer or celebrity perfume on the shelves, only more than 80 niche houses, and the staff test on your skin rather than on paper strips. Expect bottles from about $175 upward.
A Dallas Shop That Chose Larchmont for Its Flagship
Inside Retail reported in October 2023 that The Scent Room had opened its first flagship in Los Angeles here on Larchmont, with about 500 items from more than 50 brands at launch. The business began in Dallas, where co-founder and owner Sam Clark opened the first store in 2019. Larchmont became the second location and the bigger statement.
The half-number address is a clue to the space. The shop is a narrow storefront squeezed into the block, so the room feels more like a collector's study than a department store counter. Shelves run deep with bottles in every shape, from heavy faceted glass to matte stone-colored caps, and the counter in the middle is where most of the work happens.

How a Consultation Here Actually Works
The shop's own guide to niche perfume in Los Angeles, published in September 2026, describes the approach: a guided discovery that starts from a feeling, a season or a memory rather than from a brand name. Tell the advisor what you wore ten years ago, or the smell of a place you miss, and they work outward from that.
Testing happens on skin. That is slower than spraying ten blotters, and it is the point. A perfume on paper shows you its opening, while on skin it shows you how it behaves with your own warmth. Plan on trying three scents at most in one visit, spaced across both wrists and the inside of an elbow, so you can still tell them apart an hour later.
Walk-ins are welcome during opening hours. Thursday through Saturday evenings, after 6 PM, are the time to come if you work during the day and want the extra two hours to let a scent develop before deciding.
It helps to wear, or bring, whatever you already own and like. Advisors can read a lot from a familiar bottle, and it saves ten minutes of describing notes in words that mean different things to different people. Say plainly what you dislike too. If powdery iris or heavy oud makes you wince, saying so early removes a whole wall of shelves from the conversation.
The shop's refusal to stock designer and celebrity perfume shapes the whole visit. You will not find the department store names here, so there is no shortcut of pointing at a familiar logo. That makes the first five minutes feel slower, and it is also why people leave with something nobody else in their office wears.
Bottles Worth Testing and What They Cost
Argos Birth of Venus is the shop's best seller across both its Dallas and Los Angeles locations, according to its 2026 guide. It costs $175 for 30ml and $290 for 100ml, though the online listing shows it as unavailable, so ask the Larchmont team what is on the shelf that day.
Matière Première Vanilla Powder is one of the LA team's most recommended bottles, priced at $230 for 50ml and $320 for 100ml. It is a good test for anyone who thinks vanilla means sweet. Maison Crivelli Hibiscus Mahajad is the splurge, at $325 for 50ml and $560 for 100ml, and Bon Parfumeur Noir Atlas 604 is listed at $290 for 50ml.
An honest skip: do not buy the 100ml of Hibiscus Mahajad on a first visit. The jump from $325 to $560 is steep, and an extrait that strong is easy to love in the shop and hard to wear every day. Take the 50ml if it truly wins, or leave with the memory and come back.
When to Visit and What to Do If It Is Busy
Sunday through Wednesday the shop closes at 6 PM, and Larchmont is busiest on weekend afternoons, when the sidewalk fills with families and coffee lines. Thursday evening is the sweet spot: the street has quieted, the shop is open until 8 PM, and the advisors have more time per customer.
If every advisor is mid-consultation, cross First Street to Diptyque, the Paris house with a boutique just north on Larchmont, and test one of its eaux de toilette as a contrast. Coming back to The Scent Room with a reference point makes the conversation faster, because you can say exactly what you liked or disliked.
Larchmont Village Before or After
Larchmont Boulevard between Beverly Boulevard and First Street is a short, walkable strip of independent shops and cafes shaded by ficus trees. Chevalier's Books, which Time Out calls a fixture since 1940, is a few doors south and a quiet place to let a sample dry down while you browse.
For a longer walk, follow the side streets south into Windsor Square, where the lawns are wide and the sidewalks shaded. A loop of fifteen or twenty minutes is enough for a niche scent to move from its opening into the heart, which is the version you will actually live with.
