West Hollywood Perfumery: Sunday Noon Testing at Byredo
Byredo at 8920 Melrose Ave in West Hollywood takes walk-ins, Mon-Sat 10 AM to 6 PM and Sundays from noon. Start with the $60 Nomade discovery set.
Byredo, at 8920 Melrose Ave in West Hollywood, is a walk-in perfumery where you can test the whole Stockholm line without booking. It opens Monday through Saturday from 10 AM to 6 PM and on Sunday from 12 PM to 6 PM. A 50ml eau de parfum costs $235, and the six-vial Nomade discovery set costs $60, which is the smarter first purchase for most visitors.
A Stockholm House on the Edge of Beverly Hills
Byredo's own store page says the brand was founded in Stockholm in 2006 by Ben Gorham. The Melrose shop came much later. Uncover LA reported that it opened on February 15, 2020, as a 3,030-square-foot space designed by the Swedish firm Halleroed, and the outlet described it as the brand's largest store at the time.
The location matters. This stretch of Melrose sits at the western end of the avenue, a few blocks from the Beverly Hills line, where the street turns from vintage stalls into gallery-style fashion houses. Byredo shares its street address with Acne Studios, another Swedish label, so the two storefronts read almost like a small Scandinavian embassy facing the traffic.
At the 2020 opening, the shop launched an exclusive candle named after its own address and hosted an installation by the artist Martine Syms. Those were opening-season extras rather than permanent features, so treat them as part of the store's story rather than something to ask for today.

Which Bottles to Test First
Start with Mojave Ghost, a soft woody floral that wears close to the skin. It costs $235 for 50ml, $330 for 100ml and $500 for the 250ml bottle. Gypsy Water and Bal d'Afrique make good second and third tests, and both follow the same pricing, $235 for 50ml and $330 for 100ml on the US site.
The trap is buying the big bottle on the first visit. Byredo fragrances shift noticeably after an hour, and the dry air on Melrose speeds that up. Test two at most, one per wrist, then leave. The $60 Nomade discovery set holds six 2ml vials, enough to wear each scent for a few days at home before choosing a full size.
If you already know you love one of them, the 100ml at $330 is the better value per milliliter than two 50ml bottles at $235 each. Skip the 250ml unless it is your signature, since a bottle that size takes years to finish.
How the Store Works: Advisors, Wrapping and Appointments
The FAQ on the official store page says advisors are on hand to help you try fragrances before you buy, and that the shop offers one-to-one fragrance discovery sessions plus complimentary gift wrapping. The only services marked by appointment are the makeup consultation and distant sales, so fragrance testing is a straight walk-in.
The shop carries the full Byredo range, which covers fragrance, makeup, home scents, leather goods, sunglasses and jewelry. That breadth is useful for gifts. A candle or a hand cream next to a discovery set makes a complete present without reaching the price of a full perfume bottle. Ask an advisor to pull the testers for home scents as well. Smelling a candle beside a perfume shows how differently the house handles a room and a wrist, and that contrast often settles which gift suits the person you are buying for.
Timing Your Visit on Melrose
Sunday is the odd day here. The doors open at noon instead of 10 AM, and the shop still closes at 6 PM, so the Sunday window is six hours instead of eight. Arriving right at noon on Sunday gets you the store before the afternoon Melrose crowd drifts west from the vintage blocks.
On weekdays, the hour after the 10 AM opening is the calmest stretch for a one-to-one session. Late afternoon on Saturday is the busiest. If an advisor is tied up, wander the leather goods wall for a few minutes, then come back once the counter clears.
If Byredo Is Not the Right Fit
Byredo leans minimal, and some noses find the line too quiet. If that is you, two other Los Angeles perfumeries sit within a short drive. Le Labo has a lab on West Third Street, where bottles are blended and labeled by hand at the counter, and Diptyque has a street boutique on North Beverly Drive in Beverly Hills with a warmer, more floral house style. Testing one of them on the same afternoon gives you a real comparison.
The cleanest way to compare is to carry the Byredo blotters with you. Write the scent name on each strip before you leave, since the strips all look alike by the second shop. Smell them again an hour later, next to whatever you tested elsewhere, and the one you keep returning to is usually the answer.
A Walk Down Western Melrose
The Pacific Design Center, the cluster of blue, green and red glass buildings on Melrose Avenue, is a short walk east and makes an easy architecture stop while a sample settles. Its plaza is open, and the buildings are striking from the sidewalk even if you never go inside.
Further east, Melrose Place splits off as a quiet side street lined with boutiques, a calmer place to walk than the main avenue. Stay on the shaded side in the afternoon, since this part of West Hollywood has little cover once the sun moves west.
Byredo, West Hollywood: Address, Hours and Phone
Address: 8920 Melrose Ave, West Hollywood, CA 90069. Phone: (310) 786-9950. Hours: Monday through Saturday 10 AM to 6 PM, Sunday 12 PM to 6 PM. Fragrance testing needs no appointment. Metered parking runs along Melrose and the side streets, and West Hollywood enforces meters strictly, so feed the meter before you start testing.
For a first visit, buy the $60 discovery set and give each vial a few days. For a gift, pair a 50ml eau de parfum at $235 with the free wrapping. The Karpo APP can line up the rest of a Melrose afternoon around the visit, from the design center to a coffee stop, so the scent has time to open before you decide.
Ask Karpo for more information.
