Hand-Blended Perfumery on West Third Street: Le Labo
Le Labo at 8385 West Third Street opens at 11 AM daily and closes 7 PM, or 6 PM on Sundays. Every bottle is blended and labeled by hand when you buy it.
Le Labo, at 8385 West Third Street in Los Angeles 90048, is a perfumery where your bottle does not exist until you buy it. A lab technician blends the concentrate, fills the bottle and prints a label with your name at the counter. The shop opens at 11 AM every day and closes at 7 PM Monday through Saturday and at 6 PM on Sunday. Santal 33 in 50ml costs $250.
From a Nolita Lab to Third Street
Le Labo's own about page says the brand was created in 2006 by two friends who opened their first lab on Elizabeth Street in Nolita, New York. Those friends were Eddie Roschi and Fabrice Penot, and the Estée Lauder Companies bought the business in 2014. The lab concept never changed after the sale. Each shop is built to look like a working room rather than a showroom.
Le Labo lists this shop on its Los Angeles boutiques page as its West Hollywood location, though the postal address is Los Angeles. In practice it sits on the busy stretch of Third Street between La Cienega and Fairfax, a block of cafes, design stores and small clothing shops that locals use as a weekday errand strip rather than a tourist promenade.

What Happens at the Counter
The brand's FAQ describes each creation as mindfully blended, labeled and packed by hand, prepared to order with a personalized label. You choose a scent and a size, and the technician mixes the oil with alcohol and water in front of you. The label carries your name or a short message and the date the bottle was made. It is one of the few perfume purchases where the wait is part of the experience.
Allow extra time on a weekend afternoon, when several bottles may be waiting to be blended ahead of yours. Do not treat the wait as dead time. Ask the technician to spray two scents you are still deciding between on separate blotters, and smell them again just before your bottle is finished.
The FAQ also notes that freshly compounded eau de parfum goes through maceration, which typically takes at least 14 days. In plain terms, the bottle you take home will deepen over the first two weeks. Do not judge it by the first spray on day one.
Santal 33 and the Los Angeles Exclusive
Santal 33 is the bottle most first-time visitors already know by reputation, a sandalwood and leather scent that fills a room. On the US site it costs $250 for 50ml and $348 for 100ml. Another 13, a musky skin scent, is also $250 for 50ml and is the safer blind choice if you want something that stays close.
Le Labo also makes city exclusives that are sold mainly in their home cities, and MUSC 25 is the one tied to Los Angeles. Ask about it at the counter. A city exclusive is the honest reason to buy here rather than in another city, since the classic collection is the same everywhere.
If you cannot decide, the classic collection discovery set holds five 1.5ml vials for $35. That is a small fraction of the price of a full bottle, and it lets you wear Santal 33 at home for a week before deciding whether you love it or simply love the idea of it.
A frank note on Santal 33: it is so widely worn in Los Angeles that you will smell it on strangers in coffee lines along this very street. If you want a signature that is yours, skip it and spend your testing time on the less obvious bottles. If you love it anyway, the personalized label at least makes your bottle look like nobody else's.
Think about the label before you reach the counter. A first name, an initial or a short date fits best, and the technician will print what you give them, so spell names out clearly. For a gift, a date that means something to the recipient tends to land better than a long message that has to be shrunk to fit.
Refills and Bringing Your Bottle Back
The refill program is available in select labs worldwide. It covers 50ml, 100ml and 500ml bottles from the Classic Collection and City Exclusive Collection all year, and the FAQ prices a refill at roughly 20 percent off the retail price. A technician blends the refill fresh, and the bottle gets a new label with the refill date. Bring your empty bottle and ask whether this lab is set up for refills on the day you visit.
When to Go and Where to Walk
Weekday afternoons are the calmest. Saturday afternoons bring the longest blending queue, when Third Street foot traffic is at its heaviest. Sunday closes an hour earlier, at 6 PM, so a late Sunday visit leaves little time to wait for a bottle.
Joan's on Third, the cafe and market across the street, is the obvious pairing. It opens daily from 8 AM to 8 PM on its own site, so a coffee there while your bottle is being blended works on almost any day. Walk east on Third and you reach the Original Farmers Market at Fairfax in about twenty minutes, a covered maze of produce stands and food counters that is easier to explore on foot than by car.
Le Labo, West Hollywood Location: Address, Hours, Phone
Address: 8385 West Third Street, Los Angeles, CA 90048. Phone: (323) 782-0411. Hours: Monday to Saturday 11 AM to 7 PM, Sunday 11 AM to 6 PM. No appointment is needed. Metered parking runs along Third Street, and the side streets have time limits, so leave extra meter time if the blending queue is long.
For a gift, buy a 50ml and ask for the recipient's name on the label. For yourself, start with the $35 discovery set or ask about MUSC 25. The Karpo APP can build the rest of a Third Street afternoon around the visit, from a table at Joan's to a walk toward the Farmers Market.
