Type ice cream near me anywhere in the Inner Richmond and the pin drops on Clement Street. That is correct, and not very useful. Clement runs for well over a mile of solid commercial frontage, and the dessert stops along it keep wildly different hours — one is dark on Tuesdays, one does not close until midnight, and the one people search for most is not actually on Clement at all. The good news is that the three worth the walk cluster tightly, and they complement rather than duplicate each other: an American sundae counter, a Japanese crepe window, and a proper old-school scoop shop one block south. Done in the right order, it is a forty-minute walk with three stops and no wasted blocks.
Each of these three closes on a different night and a different clock, and the Richmond's afternoon fog can turn a casual stroll into a cold one. Karpo can tell you which of them is actually open before you leave the house, and in what order to hit them.
Stop one — Toy Boat by Jane, 401 Clement Street
Toy Boat has anchored the corner of 5th and Clement since 1982, first as the Toy Boat Dessert Diner and now as Toy Boat by Jane, after the local bakery group took it over. The vintage arcade toys and the mechanical horse are still in place; what changed is the counter, which now runs Jane's pastry, bread and coffee programme alongside the scoops. One detail matters more than the decor: Toy Boat does not make its own ice cream. It serves other people's — specifically Double Rainbow, Mitchell's, which has been scooping in San Francisco since 1953, and San Francisco's Hometown Creamery, which churns its own dairy over in the Inner Sunset. If you are trying to taste the city's local producers side by side without crossing three neighbourhoods, this counter is the shortcut.
Hours are the thing to get right here. Monday runs noon to 10pm, Tuesday is closed all day, Wednesday through Saturday runs noon to 10pm, and Sunday shifts to 10am to 8pm. That Tuesday closure is the single most common wasted trip on this street. The Sunday shift is worth planning around too — it is the only day the counter opens in the morning and the only day it shuts before dark, so a Sunday version of this walk has to start early and finish here rather than end late.
Stop two — Genki Crepes & Mini Mart, 330 Clement Street
Two short blocks east, Genki is half creperie and half Japanese and Korean convenience store, and it is comfortably the latest-running dessert option on the strip. The crepes follow the Harajuku format — cone-rolled, filled with fruit, custard, cheesecake or a scoop of ice cream, eaten standing on the pavement — and the shop side stocks the snack aisle you would otherwise drive to Japantown for. Hours run 11:30am to 11pm Monday through Thursday, 11:30am to midnight on Friday, 11am to midnight on Saturday and 11am to 11pm on Sunday. Nothing else in this guide is open past 10pm, which makes Genki the default finish for anyone eating dinner on Clement first.
Practically, that closing-time gap decides the direction of the walk. If you are coming out of a Clement Street dinner at 9:45pm, Toy Boat is minutes from shutting and Genki still has an hour or more in hand. If you are starting at 6pm with time to spare, run it the other way round and keep Genki as the last stop so nothing closes underneath you while you are still deciding.
Stop three — Joe's Ice Cream, and the address everyone gets wrong
The third stop is the one that costs people time. Joe's Ice Cream is routinely listed at 5351 Geary Boulevard across delivery platforms and aggregator pages. That address is stale: Joe's moved to 5420 Geary Boulevard back in May 2010 and has been there ever since. It is also not on Clement — from the Toy Boat corner it is roughly a ten-minute walk west and one block south, which is the right call if what you want is a sit-down scoop-and-burger counter rather than a dessert window. Current hours run 11am to 9pm Monday through Thursday, 11am to 10pm Friday and Saturday, and noon to 9pm Sunday. It opens earlier than anything on Clement and closes before Genki does, which is exactly why it belongs at the start of the route rather than the end.
Sequencing the walk
A clean Saturday version: start at Joe's on Geary around 4pm while it is still quiet, walk north to Clement and turn east, browse Green Apple Books at 506 Clement — the neighbourhood's other institution, and a useful way to let the first scoop settle — then take a sundae at Toy Boat, and finish at Genki any time before midnight. A weekday version compresses to two stops, because Joe's closes at 9pm and Toy Boat is dark on Tuesdays. The whole route sits inside the 38 Geary and 2 Clement bus corridors, so it works without a car. If you do drive, street parking on Clement between 4th and 8th is the hardest in the neighbourhood on weekend afternoons; the residential avenues one block north are consistently easier and add three minutes of walking at most.
One more local reality that visitors underestimate: the Inner Richmond runs cold and grey most afternoons, including in August, and the marine layer usually pushes back in before sunset. Every stop on this route has indoor seating, which is precisely why locals treat it as a year-round crawl rather than a summer one. Bring a jacket you would wear in October and the fog stops being a problem.
