🎭 A movie palace still lit

The El Rey Theatre is a 1930s Art Deco movie palace on Wilshire Boulevard that Goldenvoice now runs as a live music hall in the Miracle Mile district. Clifford Balch designed the building, and it screened first-run films for more than fifty years before a 1994 conversion handed the room to touring bands.

Crystal chandeliers still hang over a multi-level floor, and the terrazzo lobby and neon marquee carry the cinema-era detail into every set. The room stays intimate, with sightlines from the rail and the balcony that keep the stage close from either level.

Doors run from 7 PM to midnight, and the calendar leans toward rock, indie, and hip-hop acts booked at club scale. Out front, the neon marquee still lights Wilshire the way it did across its picture-house decades, a detail that outlasted the switch to live music.
