🌿 A Volunteer Tended Urban Garden

Liz Christy Community Garden is the first community garden in NYC, founded in 1973 by the Green Guerillas at 111 East Houston Street. The narrow lot on the edge of Nolita and the Lower East Side runs far deeper than the sidewalk suggests.

Follow the winding paths past grape arbors, birch trees, herb plots and wildflowers. A mini gazebo and a small educational area share the ground with a pond 2.5 feet deep, home to goldfish, and volunteers keep every corner tended.

Volunteer upkeep also shapes the calendar. The gates open Saturday from noon to 4 PM all year, and from May through September they add Sunday from noon to 4 PM plus Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6 PM until dusk. Time a weekend stroll for one of those windows, and this quiet urban garden becomes an easy pause on a downtown walk.
