The Shed Has a Rolling Shell for Large Scale Art

Discover original creative work where the High Line meets Hudson Yards, inside a building designed to change shape.

Plan your visit to The Shed.

🎭 A Building That Moves

Look up before you head inside. The Shed sits where the High Line meets the Hudson Yards plaza, and its pale, quilted exterior gives the skyline a different outline. Its architectural trick is a telescoping outer shell that rolls on rails over the adjoining plaza to create The McCourt, a flexible hall for exhibitions, installations and performances.

Inside the eight level Bloomberg Building, two gallery levels share the address with the Griffin Theater. The nonprofit commissions and presents original work across visual arts, performing arts and popular culture. The building exists for new work, and the movable shell is what lets the program change size from one month to the next.

Start with the architecture, then choose the exhibition or performance that catches your eye. Take a second look at the shell from the plaza side, where the rails it travels on are easy to spot.

Find it at 545 W 30th St. Check the current program and its entry times before heading over.
