A bronze George Washington stands on the front steps, marking the balcony where the first president took the oath of office in 1789. Inside, a ring of columns rises around a coffered rotunda, the marble floor washed in light from the dome overhead. The Greek Revival building you walk through today went up in 1842 as a customs house, long after the original hall was gone. It later served as a sub-treasury, and the National Park Service now keeps the doors open, free, to anyone wandering off Wall Street.
