Princeton Day Trip: A Free Art Museum, Then a Hoagie
A free museum inside a striking new campus building, then a half hoagie for $8.50 on Nassau Street: one ticket out, and the fare plus lunch is the whole bill.

🖼️ The Museum Costs Nothing
Princeton's art museum reopened in a new building on October 31, 2025, and admission is still free. Most galleries sit on the second floor across nine interlocked pavilions, joined by ground-level artwalks that cut through the building. Clay Has Memory: Creative Lineages from Africa, up through July 3, 2027, includes Zizipho Poswa's glazed earthenware figure uNa'kaMzingisi (Mzingisi's Mother). Hours vary by day: Monday to Wednesday and Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday and Friday until 8 p.m., Sunday noon to 5 p.m. Mosaic, the third-floor restaurant, serves 10 to 4 on Monday and Thursday through Sunday. The walk from Princeton Station takes about ten minutes.

🥪 Lunch at Hoagie Haven
Hoagie Haven is a longtime Nassau Street counter that stacks hefty sandwiches on oversized rolls. The signature Sanchez layers chicken cutlet, American cheese, mozzarella sticks and fries under the shop's sweet, tangy Sanchez sauce, and the shop's own menu prices it at $8.50 for a half and $16 for a whole. Other halves run $8.25 to $9.50. Delivery apps post their own higher figures, so treat those as app prices rather than the counter price. Card hours come from Google, so check the shop before you go.

🚆 The Route and the Fares
From Penn Station, the Northeast Corridor line takes about seventy-five minutes to Princeton Junction, where the Dinky covers the last five minutes to campus. One ticket covers both legs: NJ Transit's trip planner lists $21.60 regular one-way and $9.90 reduced for New York Penn to Princeton, with the Dinky connection included. The campus walk and the museum are free, but the train fare and lunch still come out of your pocket. Until November 14, 2026, the Portal North Bridge cutover means fewer weekday Northeast Corridor trains into Penn Station, so check both directions before you go.
