Guided Apartment Tours Through Immigrant Hard Times

Guided tours climb a restored Orchard Street tenement to trace how immigrant families actually lived, worked, and got by.

🏚️ Inside 103 Orchard

Tours here move through a restored Orchard Street tenement where real immigrant families once crowded into tight walk-up apartments. Guides open recreated parlors and kitchens, from striped floor rugs to a red-papered sitting room, and tie each object to the people who used it. The Hard Times route follows households that weathered the 1873 and 1930s depressions, when rent came due and work vanished. You climb narrow stairs past the building's original fire escape, hearing how sweatshop labor, boarders, and shared privies shaped daily survival on the Lower East Side. Reservations run on timed, guided slots.
