🌿 Waterfront Infrastructure Turned Open-Air Classroom

George Trakas transformed this once-inaccessible industrial edge into a half-mile esplanade woven with native sweet gums and granite steps. Grab DEP's free self-guided scavenger hunt booklet at the entrance, tracing local water flow from city sinks to the eight giant digester eggs across Whale Creek. The path opens daily from sunrise to sunset with free public access, and a 1400-pound granite table shaped like a shipping bollard features an etched historical watershed map where visitors can pour water over the stone to trace flow into the East River. It sits at Provost Street and Paidge Avenue in northern Greenpoint, a 15-minute walk from the Greenpoint Avenue G train station, with water fountains along the trail.
