🏛️ Bronze Catches The Sun

Start at Grand Army Plaza in Central Park for a monument that puts General Sherman on horseback beside Victory. The Saint Gaudens sculpture rises 24 feet at the Fifth Avenue park entrance, a compact stop with a big civic story.

Look closely at the gilded bronze and the movement of horse and rider. The allegorical figure leading them was modeled by Hettie Anderson, a prominent African American model of the Gilded Age. The details reward a slower look, especially when direct sunlight catches the bronze and its gold tones sharpen.

The setting changes after dark, when illuminated skyscrapers frame the monument and keep the plaza connected to the city around it. The park stays open daily from 6 AM to 1 AM, giving you room for an early walk, a midday pause, or a late look before the park closes.
