Fried Seafood Beside a Longstanding Waterfront Picnic Spot

Fresh and fried seafood lands on waterfront picnic tables at a long-running City Island institution.

Plan a picnic by the water.

🦐 Counter to Picnic Tables

Seafood by the water is the whole plan at Johnny's Reef Restaurant, a City Island institution serving fresh and fried seafood for more than 60 years. The setup is pure cafeteria. Grab a tray at the counter, then carry it out to the blue picnic tables under a long open canopy beside the bay.

Paper boats of fried seafood and little cups of sauce make the classic tray, with the water and a bright sky right behind the tables. Cyclists roll up and park beside the benches, and there is indoor seating too when the wind picks up off the water.

Doors open daily at half past eleven in the morning. Closing runs 10 PM Monday through Thursday, half past eleven at night on Friday and Saturday, and a late half past midnight on Sunday, which makes a sunset tray an easy call most evenings. Bring a crew, claim a table, and linger by the bay a while.
