Cuban Memorial Boulevard to Versailles: Miami's exile story in two hours

A marble torch for Brigade 2506, a domino pavilion, and the ventanita of a Cuban kitchen pouring cortaditos since 1971.

Save the coffee window for last.

Two pins on Calle Ocho

🕯️ Start at the Brigade 2506 flame

The marble torch on the median of SW 13th Avenue honors the men of Assault Brigade 2506, who landed at the Bay of Pigs on April 17, 1961. Engraved names run down the base, artillery shells sit at the corners, and the flame burns above them. Four blocks of boulevard hold the bronze map of Cuba, the Maceo bust and the ceiba tree where people leave offerings. Give the torch one quiet minute before you turn toward the domino tables.

☕ Read the dominoes, then the coffee window

Leave the torch and walk west along the boulevard for about five minutes to Máximo Gómez Park, where club members slap dominoes under the pavilion from nine to six while spectators take the benches. Versailles sits roughly 2.5 miles further west along SW 8th Street, too far to cover on foot in the heat, so take a car or the bus rather than walking. At the ventanita order a cortadito or a colada and drink it standing; the window has been a gathering place for Miami's Cuban exile community since 1971.

🗺️ Run it in one afternoon

Give the route two hours between ten in the morning and four in the afternoon, monument first, dominoes second, coffee last. Nothing needs booking and the median never closes, while the park keeps nine to six daily. Both stops sit outdoors or at an open counter. A stormy afternoon moves inside the dining room instead. The monument and the restaurant sit 2.5 miles apart, so make that leg by car or bus; the Freedom Tower downtown, the refugee center from 1962 to 1974, extends the outing by another hour.
