The shelves at 372 Fifth Avenue look like a hero's supply closet: capes, masks and superpower supplies. The shop opened in 2004 as the front door of 826NYC's youth writing center, and every purchase helps fund writing programs for kids 6 to 18. The storefront was redone in 2021 when students, volunteers and supporters had trouble finding it. Trying a cape on what 826NYC calls the world's only Cape Tester is free, but call ahead first. We'd set aside 15 to 30 minutes. Take the F, G or R to 4th Avenue–9th Street. Hours are 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM Tuesday to Friday and 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM weekends.
