At First Light, Let the Bike Set the Pace
Plan a half-day, self-guided ride with a steady pace, free public paths, and one seasonal campground detour. It suits riders who want varied terrain and an early start, with transit breaks between stretches.
Plot the ride
Warm up at the park edge
Start at Mount Prospect Park for a compact warm-up before the longer stretches. The park sits beside the Brooklyn Museum and the Botanic Garden, with several entrances and a wooded rise that changes the grade. The grounds open daily at 6:00 AM and stay open until 1:00 AM. Use the early window for cooler pavement, then roll onward when the park is quiet and shaded.

Take the airfield stretch
Shift to a former airfield for the route's most open section, with long sightlines, birds, and trails that feel removed from dense blocks. The site changes the pace with historic aircraft tours and room to stop between rides. Camping operates from April through October, with tent and RV sites on the grounds. Bikes share the setting with hiking and birding, while air-conditioned restrooms and showers make a longer pause practical.

Follow the waterfront line
Finish on a shoreline corridor built for movement, where the surface links Gowanus and Red Hook and keeps the route pointed toward water. The path works for a measured final stretch, with room to trade pace for views as neighborhoods change. The greenway is a multi-use path designed for pedestrians and cyclists. Expect an urban ride rather than a closed circuit, and leave time for crossings before your return.
