An Overgrown Alphabet City Lot Full Of Steel Art

Wander an overgrown East Village lot where salvaged steel figures rise from the weeds beside a longtime art space.

🛠️ Rust among the weeds

The lot runs beside Kenkeleba House, a longtime East Village art space, and fills with tall grass and vines through summer. Large steel figures stand among the greenery, weathered to a deep orange rust, one topped with a painted panel of pale crosses. A stripped motorcycle sits low in the weeds, its frame corroded to the same color as the sculptures around it. A hand-lettered gate marks the entrance on East 3rd Street, and brick tenements press in on either side. In winter the leaves drop and the metalwork stands bare against the surrounding walls.
