Charleston Park Walk Beneath Ancient Live Oaks

A shaded brick path park behind City Hall, with live oaks, azaleas and a miniature obelisk.

Walk the paths behind City Hall.

🌳 History Under The Oaks

Step behind City Hall and trade the surrounding streets for the shade of Washington Square. Ancient live oaks and azaleas define this Charleston park, where a grid of brick walking paths connects a collection of monuments. Reading and resting are part of its everyday rhythm, alongside a slower encounter with local history.

The Washington Light Infantry is commemorated by a miniature obelisk rising 42 feet. A bronze statue of George Washington stands among the markers, and a memorial honors fallen soldiers. Henry Timrod has a monument here too, bringing the poet into a landscape of civic and military remembrance. These commemorations turn a walk through the park into an open air look at the city and its past.

Find this shaded retreat at 80 Broad St in Charleston. The park opens at half past six AM and stays open daily until 11 PM.
