Description

Constructed between 1853 and 1879, this federal building stands as a distinct Classical Revival landmark within Charleston’s historic district. Designed by Ammi B. Young using granite and limestone, the structure is defined by its prominent Corinthian porticos and an ornate central cortile. While some find the monolithic presence unexpected among local architecture, the exterior serves as a functional community space, frequently acting as an open-air venue for civic concerts or a scenic place to rest while walking downtown.
