A Seafood Escape to City Island, Without Leaving NYC

One train and one bus put you on a main street of seafood halls, boatyards and marina slips, where the walk ends at a table facing Pelham Bay.

Trade the skyline for marina views.

⚓ Out of the Towers, Onto the Docks

The 6 train runs out of Midtown to its last stop at Pelham Bay Park, and the Bx29 picks up outside to carry you over the City Island Bridge. Door to door it is usually 60 to 90 minutes from Manhattan, depending on where you start and how the connections fall; the last stretch is all water, boatyards and low houses.

From the bus the avenue runs north through the working island: marina slips packed with sailboats and powerboats, boatyards, and a small nautical museum. The slips belong to private marinas rather than a public promenade; for open water on foot, Pelham Cemetery has benches facing the bay, and the wetlands across the avenue are open for sitting by the water.

At 591 City Island Avenue the walk ends at Sea Shore Restaurant & Marina, which has been serving seafood since 1929 and stays open noon to 11 PM every day. The indoor room looks out over the bay, and the outdoor deck depends on the weather and the restaurant's own schedule once it turns cold. In the cold months, from the November 1 clock change until late January, the sun is down before 5 PM, so come at midday or early afternoon and ride back before dark.
