A Philadelphia Week, One Block At A Time

Seven days planned as a series of short, walkable blocks rather than one grand tour: Old City courtyards, a colonial graveyard, the Italian Market, and a Victorian cemetery along the Schuylkill. Each day is one neighbourhood, so the walking stays legible.

Pick one block and walk it slowly.

🏛️ Monday, The Chestnut Street Blocks

Start where the city argues with itself: Independence Hall and the assembly rooms behind it. Take the guided interior if the line is short, otherwise read the courtyard plaques and keep moving east. The blocks between 5th and 6th hold most of what you came for, and none of it needs a car.

⛲ Tuesday, A Square With A History

Washington Square began as a burial ground and now works as the quietest room in Center City: fountain, benches, and a ring of trees that blocks the traffic noise. Sit on the south side facing the fountain and give it twenty minutes before the next block. It is the right place to reset between Old City and the shops on Walnut.

🥬 Wednesday, The Market Block

The Italian Market is nine blocks of produce stands, butchers and bakery windows, and the visitors centre is the sensible place to start. Walk south on 9th before turning into the side streets, because the cross-streets hold the cheesemongers and the smaller counters. Bring cash and an empty bag; this is a shopping block, not a museum one.

⚰️ Thursday, Franklin's Graveyard

A two-acre colonial burial ground where Franklin is buried, and the wall along 5th Street lets you see the stones without a ticket. Go late morning when the tour groups thin out and read the markers rather than photographing them. It takes twenty minutes and belongs to the same Old City walk as Monday.

🌳 Friday, The Ridge Avenue Cemetery

A Victorian garden cemetery on the ridge above the Schuylkill, laid out for strolling rather than mourning. Follow the loop past the river overlook before the light drops, because that edge is the reason the walk works. It is a longer block than the others; give it an afternoon and wear something you can walk in.

🌆 Saturday, The City Hall Plaza

Dilworth Park sits against City Hall, which makes it the one block on this list that works best after dark. The plaza's fountains and seating are the reason to stay put rather than pass straight through, and the transit access in the same block means the trip back is short. It pairs well with a Saturday in Center City.

🌿 Sunday, The Small Garden

A fenced pocket park beside Independence Hall, planted as a colonial-style garden and rarely crowded. Take the bench at the Chestnut Street gate and finish the week with the smallest block on the list. Treat it as a pause inside an Old City morning rather than a destination on its own, and let Independence Hall next door do the anchoring.
