A Japanese Garden with Over 130 Years of Friendship
Explore Osaka Garden on a short Chicago outing, with free entry and a suggested donation supporting its upkeep.
🏮 Friendship on Wooded Island
Osaka Garden sits on Wooded Island in Jackson Park, carrying another name that fits its long story, the Garden of the Phoenix. The site has stood for over 130 years as a symbol of friendship and cultural exchange between Japan and the United States.
The grounds are compact and brief to explore, with quiet paths threading past stone lanterns and tranquil ponds. Carefully maintained landscaping and traditional elements, including a stone bridge, give you plenty to take in at walking pace. This is an outing to spend looking closely, with the garden doing the talking.
Admission is free, with a suggested 10 dollar donation per visitor supporting maintenance and advancement. Parking is on Stony Island, and the garden sits at 6200 S Cornell Ave in Chicago. It opens Tuesday to Sunday from 10 AM to 6 PM and closes on Mondays. Parts can occasionally close for restoration.
