A Historic Midtown Rail Hub With Public Art
Board Amtrak or LIRR beneath a 92 foot skylight, then browse food hall counters and commissioned installations nearby.
🏛️ Look Up First
Start at 421 8th Avenue, where the old post office now does more than move Amtrak and LIRR passengers. Under the 92 foot glass skylight, the concourse gives you room to pause before the platform call, with subway access close by and a food hall built for a quick loop. Food hall counters sit beside generous waiting areas, giving the stop a social rhythm beyond a departure board.
Treat the art as part of the route. Stan Douglas, Elmgreen and Dragset, and Kehinde Wiley anchor site specific works commissioned with Public Art Fund, while free concourse music and civic programming keep the room from feeling like a waiting area.
The hall stays open daily from 5 AM to 1 AM, enough for an early train, a late arrival, or a slow look upward before the city pulls you back outside.
