Fort Hamilton has guarded the Narrows for nearly two centuries, and its caponier, a squat brick-and-granite gallery built to sweep the moat, now holds the only museum in the city devoted to harbor defense. Cases line the vaulted rooms with coast artillery shells, muskets, and Revolutionary-era uniforms, and a hands-on station lets you sight down a flintlock at a painted target. Admission runs free, though the museum sits on an active Army post, and you clear the visitor gate and show ID before walking in. The stone tunnels stay cool year round, and the Verrazzano towers loom just past the walls.
