How to use the evening
The pattern that works on this street: an early tasting, then dinner at one of the restaurants on the same two blocks, then home. Because everything is within a few minutes' walk and the parking is solved by the lot behind the shops, this is one of very few places in Los Angeles where an evening involving wine does not require a designated driver and a twenty-minute drive between stops.
The constraint is that Larchmont closes early. The street is quiet by half past nine and there is no late option here, so if the evening is meant to continue, plan for it to continue somewhere else — Koreatown is ten minutes south-east and runs latest, and Melrose is ten minutes north.
What else to drink on the street
Several of the restaurants on the boulevard keep lists that are worth drinking from rather than just ordering from, and because the trade is local rather than transient the mark-ups are more reasonable than on a destination strip. If a tasting is not scheduled on the night you are free, taking a table and working through a list by the glass is a perfectly good substitute.
The other Larchmont option is provisioning: buy the bottle and the cheese, and take both to a table at home or to one of the parks nearby. That is what most of the neighbourhood actually does with this shop.
Getting there and parking
There is metered parking on the boulevard and a public lot behind the western side of the shops — the reason Larchmont functions as a walkable evening at all. Surrounding Hancock Park and Windsor Square streets have permit restrictions in places, so read the signs. Bus routes run along Beverly Boulevard and Melrose; there is no rail station within easy walking distance, so this is a driving-and-then-walking neighbourhood.
