The 49ers were founded in 1946 as charter members of the upstart All-America Football Conference — the first major-league professional sports team based in San Francisco. Home was Kezar Stadium, built in 1925 at the southeastern corner of Golden Gate Park, a municipal bowl that held around 60,000 and put its fans practically on the sideline.
