Che Fico at 838 Divisadero Street was for years the default answer when anyone asked for a restaurant near me in NoPa. It has been closed since June and there is no announced reopening date, which is worth knowing before you plan an evening around it.

What happened
A fire broke out on Thursday 12 June 2026, starting in the chimney of Foghorn Taproom next door at 846 Divisadero. It began in the afternoon and caused significant damage to the rear of the building. Nobody was injured.
The interior of the restaurant itself was reported as not damaged, but the structural damage at the back was serious enough to close the business. The owner said at the time that there was no reopening timeline, and no firm date has been announced publicly since.
The sister restaurant had already gone
Che Fico Alimentari, the more casual room at 834 Divisadero, closed on 9 May 2026 — a month before the fire and for unrelated reasons. The stated plan was to merge it upstairs into the main restaurant for a more unified operation.
So the corner lost two rooms in five weeks, one by decision and one by accident. That sequence is why the listings are confusing: some sites show one address closed, some show both, and some still show the original restaurant taking bookings.
Why the listings disagree
The restaurant's own website continues to present as operational, with menus and a reservation link, while the major listing sites show it as temporarily closed. That contradiction is common after an unplanned closure and it is not evidence of a quiet reopening.
The reliable test is whether the booking system will actually give you a date. A live-looking site with no available tables in any month is the signature of a business that has not updated its front end, and it is not worth driving across the city on.
It was not the only fire on that block
The Mill, the bakery and cafe further along Divisadero, was damaged by a separate overnight fire on 29 June 2026 and closed indefinitely as well. Two significant fires on one commercial corridor inside three weeks is bad luck rather than a pattern, but it has visibly changed the street.
If your mental map of Divisadero was formed before the summer, it is worth updating before you go. Several of the anchors are not where you left them.
What is open on Divisadero
Nopa at 560 Divisadero is the obvious first alternative and remains the neighbourhood's anchor restaurant. Its hours from September run five to ten Monday through Thursday, five to eleven on Friday and Saturday, and five to half past nine on Sunday.
Souvla at 531 Divisadero runs eleven in the morning to ten at night every day, serving Greek rotisserie meats as a salad or in a pita. It is counter service rather than a dining room, and the all-day hours make it the reliable option when everything else is either closed or booked.
For a longer evening
4505 Burgers & BBQ at 705 Divisadero has more outdoor seating than the rest of NoPa combined and makes some of the better barbecue in the city. On a clear evening that patio is a genuinely good place to be and it takes groups without difficulty.
Bar Crudo is the other long-standing anchor on the corridor, and Beretta has a Divisadero location doing Italian small plates and cocktails. Between those and Nopa, the street still has a full evening in it.
What Che Fico was, for context
The restaurant made its name on Italian cooking in a striking upstairs room, and it was one of the defining San Francisco openings of its era. It also drew genuinely mixed reviews in later years, with critics describing the food as inconsistent against the strength of the space.
That is worth saying because it affects how you should feel about the closure. This was an important restaurant and a beautiful room; it was not universally agreed to be the best food on the street, and the alternatives above are not a consolation prize.
What happens to a restaurant after a fire
The gap between an interior being undamaged and a restaurant being able to open is where most of the delay lives. Kitchens depend on ventilation, gas lines and fire-suppression systems, and damage at the rear of a building is precisely where all of that runs.
Then there is the insurance process, the permitting, and in a shared building the question of what the neighbouring tenant does, since the fire started next door. None of that is fast, and none of it produces the kind of announcement a restaurant can make to reassure people. Silence for months is normal rather than ominous.
Practical notes
Do not rely on a restaurant's own website to tell you it is closed. Businesses dealing with fire damage and insurance have more urgent problems than their booking page, and the absence of a notice means nothing either way.
If you had a specific occasion planned around this room, book Nopa instead and do it now. It is the neighbourhood's strongest remaining table and demand for it has not gone down since June.
