The Outer Sunset is the part of San Francisco where searching for food near you starts returning results a mile away. West of about 30th Avenue the commercial density collapses into a handful of small strips, and everything else is houses. For pizza specifically this is genuinely clarifying: there are not twenty options to weigh, there are a few, they sit on two streets, and they do different things.
Out here the useful question is not which pizza is best but which one is still open and how far you actually have to walk in the wind. Tell Karpo where you are on the avenues and it will keep the answer to what is genuinely nearby.
Judah Street: the wood-fired option
Damnfine at 3410 Judah Street is the neighbourhood's proper pizza room — wood-fired, crusts that come out crispy and chewy, and a short list of pies that are actually composed rather than assembled. The five-mushroom is the one to order if you order one thing. The purple potato, pesto and pancetta is the one that sounds like a stunt and is not. The margherita comes with the option of hot honey or ranch, which is a very Outer Sunset piece of menu design and works better than it reads.
There are cocktails and wine, and it functions as a casual dinner or a first date rather than a takeaway stop, although takeaway is fine. It sits on the stretch of Judah between about 39th and 34th that carries most of the neighbourhood's evening life, a couple of blocks from Outerlands at 4001 Judah Street and Celia's by the Beach at 4019 Judah Street.
Noriega Street: the other tradition
The Pizza Place at 3901 Noriega Street runs on a different logic entirely: a large list of more than thirty toppings and an invitation to build your own, plus a house pie called the Spicoli for people who would rather not. This is neighbourhood pizza in the older sense — a place families order from on a Friday, sized and priced for that, and not especially interested in being a destination.
Noriega is the quieter of the two commercial strips and the more residential-feeling. Devil's Teeth Baking Company at 3876 Noriega Street and Toyose at 3814 Noriega Street sit on the same street, which means Noriega is where the neighbourhood's morning and its late night both happen, with the pizza sitting in between.
What the fog actually changes
This is not atmosphere-writing; it is a practical constraint. The Outer Sunset is in the fog belt, which means that on a large share of days — including plenty of summer days — it is genuinely cold and windy at street level in a way that the rest of the city is not. Two consequences follow. Eating pizza outdoors is frequently a bad idea here even when it would be pleasant in the Mission. And carrying a box more than a few blocks means it arrives lukewarm, faster than you would expect.
The practical version: if it is grey and blowing, eat in the room rather than taking it away, and pick the address closest to where you already are rather than the one you would prefer in better weather. If it is one of the clear afternoons, the beach end of Judah is a genuinely good place to be with food, and that is the day to take it away.
How to choose
Sitting down, drinking something, two to four people: Damnfine on Judah. Feeding a group at home, or a specific set of toppings someone is insistent about: The Pizza Place on Noriega. Ending an afternoon at Ocean Beach: Judah, because the street runs to the sand and the walk back is short. Deciding at nine on a weeknight when the wind has picked up: whichever of the two is on the street you are already standing on, which out here is the honest answer more often than not.

Street parking is one of the few parts of San Francisco where parking is genuinely easy, which is worth knowing if you are coming from elsewhere in the city with a group.
